Famed architect Herbert Fowler (designer of Walton Heath, The Berkshire, and Delamere Forest), laid out the East Course on the links land at Saunton Burrows. Golf has been played here since 1897 and it is widely regarded as the premier golf course in the West Country. The East course has been used for major amateur championships for years, notably the 1937 English Amateur when Frank Pennink was victorious. A top class links course.

RANKING #41 "An excellent example of everything a top quality links should be in a beautiful part of Devon"; "Just one of the most lovely places to enjoy the mixed pleasures of challenge and fun" - "Due to the thick, lush rough, this is the most difficult course that I have played this year."
With similar characteristics to the East course, the West course at Saunton Golf Club is another top quality links in the South West of England. However it has its own distinctions and offers no weak hole throughout the layout. Every hole requires strategy off the tee to enable an attack at the green with the approach, whilst the green complexes themselves demand 100% commitment. Arguably a little easier than the East course, but certainly no less fun.
