The golf courses in Berkshire are superb and vary from classic championship heathland courses such as The Berkshire, modern parkland courses such as Donnington Grove, to private members golf clubs such as Castle Royle. There are some quality golf clubs near Reading, and Newbury, the two major towns in Berkshire, for example Newbury & Crookham, and Reading. The back nine is truly unique among inland golf courses, with deep revetted bunkers and hazards lurking on every hole offering a great test of golf.

Sonning Golf Club is 100 years old and has an impressive pedigree. One of the ‘Great Triumvirate’ and a 5 time Open champion, JH Taylor, designed the original layout with later input from Harry Colt. Although originally a heathland course, there is now an abundance of mature trees and shrubs that line its fairways. Martin Hawtree has redesigned Sonning’s original layout and has produced an impressive new 18th hole that finishes in front of the clubhouse. With an excellent practice and short game area, Sonning can provide some of the best facilities in the South of England.

Royal Ascot is the oldest golf club in the area, dating back to 1887. But it now plays on one of the newest and best courses in Berkshire, having moved from its old course on Ascot Heath in the middle of the racecourse in 2005. The challenging 6294 yard parkland course (HSBC Golf Monthly Gold Medal Award) on 150 acres of wooded Crown land was described by one former Ryder Cup player as “one of the best new English courses I have played for a long time.” It is a Members’ Club, but welcomes societies, guests, charity events and visitors. There is an active Ladies’ Section, a flourishing Seniors’ Group, and a highly successful Juniors’ Section. Members are offered reciprocal arrangements with other ‘Royal Clubs’ worldwide.
