A Wiltshire Escape To The Manor Born At Bowood’s Queenwood Lodge
With an 18 hole championship golf course, two restaurants, stately home and 2,000 acres of Capability Brown Grade 1 listed parkland among the many tempting attractions on its doorstep, Queenwood Lodge’s guests can enjoy a very special golfing break rolled up into a private retreat. This year, the lodge has undergone a stylish makeover ensuring that the Queenwood experience is better than ever.
A unique bolt-hole for an overnight stay or a longer break, the four bedroom Georgian lodge at Bowood – home to descendants of the 1st Earl of Shelburne and the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne since 1754 – is available for exclusive rental with a housekeeper provided while a chef can be made available for meals in the lodge as required.
Tucked back from Bowood’s golf course and minutes away from the 43-bedroom Bowood Hotel & Spa in one direction, and a mile from Bowood House & Gardens in the other, Queenwood Lodge is packed with historic character alongside the contemporary touches required by today’s guests.
The Lodge features a dining room, sitting room and study alongside its four double/twin bedrooms all with ensuite bathrooms. There is plenty of space to pull back at times of privacy, for a snooze and a good book, or alternatively to come together and socialise with the rest of your party. In the warmer weather, the outside terrace within the Lodge’s secluded garden comes into its own.
Queenwood’s interiors have been lovingly designed by Lady Lansdowne who runs her own interior design business, having previously worked at Colefax & Fowler for over 15 years. She has created a gorgeously English and very cosy feel for Queenwood Lodge, alongside a well-balanced sense of its very stately surroundings.
Weaving her further magic for its recent redecoration, Lady Lansdowne has retained this essence yet with a more contemporary and pared-down approach for the impact of cleaner lines and simpler detail to serve up a lighter, fresher feel. The dining room’s carpet has been replaced with an exposed wooden floor, for instance, softening and brightening up the feel of the room’s retained warm rosé-hues. The sitting room next door also now has exposed wooden flooring, with a vast kilim rug in cream and terracotta tones. The study’s new mellow colour scheme is accentuated with soft furnishings in perfect harmony with the flow of Queenwood’s ground floor. Upstairs, flat screen plasma TVs have been introduced in all four bedrooms as part of the mission to upgrade them and their ensuite bathrooms to a level that is now consistent with the standard of those at Bowood Hotel while retaining their distinctive Queenwood character.
With prices for an overnight stay starting from £140 per person per night (based on eight guests staying), alongside dinner (food only) and breakfast, hire of Queenwood Lodge also includes use of the 3-hole practice golf course, spa facilities and admission to the House and Gardens and the Rhododendron Walks (during their respective open seasons). Rounds of golf, golf tuition and spa treatments are available on an additional basis.
