Ferndown Professional Selected For Coach Aspire Programme

PGA Professional Scott Godfrey, from Ferndown Golf Club in Dorset, was recently put forward by England Golf for the Coach Aspire Programme 2015/16. After an interview at Sport England headquarters in London, Scott was chosen as one of only 22 coaches from 16 different sports across the UK who has been selected for the programme.

The Aspire programme was established three years ago to bridge the gap between sport-specific programmes arranged by Governing Bodies of Sport and the world-class programmes facilitated by UK Sport.  Aspire is for coaches who have a realistic aspiration of coaching athletes at future Olympic, Youth Olympic and Commonwealth Games.  The programme is managed by Sports Coach UK and supported by each of the Home Country Sports Councils. They have been developed for the next generation of coaches who have the potential to progress onto UK Sport’s world class coaching programmes in the future. The programme is structured to meet the development needs of each individual coach in a range of ways including profiling activities and exploring the individual’s coaching values.

Scott became Assistant Professional at Ferndown Golf Club in February 2005. In doing so, he left behind an amateur career that saw him become both English boys’ and men’s champion, while also qualifying for the 2003 British Open played at Royal St. George’s. Scott’s real passion since turning professional has been in coaching and in 2012 he was awarded the prestigious position of England Under 18s National Girls Coach.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for me to broaden my knowledge on various aspects which contribute to making a world class coach and I intend to make the most of it. 2015 is set to be a busy year combining the course with my role as Head Professional at Ferndown Golf Club and my commitments with the England Girls squad. I will keep everyone updated with my progress throughout the programme” said Scott Godfrey.

“We are thoroughly excited for Scott and will support him throughout the year with the programme and look forward to hearing about his progress” said Ian Walton, General Manager, Ferndown Golf Club.
