Royal Dornoch ‘One Of The Best’ Say Golfing Captains

Royal Dornoch’s Championship Course has been hailed as one of the best in the world by both captains in a prestigious international tournament.

The world renowned links hosted the prestigious Jacques Leglise Trophy event which saw defending champions Great Britain and Ireland retain the cup by drawing 12½ -12½ with the Continent of Europe.

The event featuring leading amateur boys was held on 28 and 29 August at Royal Dornoch, which is part of the Highland Golf Links (HGL) partnership.

At the end of the tournament, both team captains lavished praise on the host course.

Peter McEvoy, Great Britain and Ireland Team Manager, said: “It is an unbelievably fantastic golf course. I really don’t think there is a better links; it’s probably the best. What a wonderful place.”

Miguel Franco de Sousa, the Continent of Europe Team Manager, said he first heard of Royal Dornoch in 2005 while playing with two club members in South Korea: “After that I made it one of my golfing goals to play the course. It’s by far one of the best golf courses I’ve played in my life. You are very lucky and privileged to have a course and a place like this. It’s unique in the world.”

The praise was welcomed by Neil Hampton, Royal Dornoch’s general manager: “It was a great honour for the club and the town to host this illustrious event. A lot of hard work went into preparing the course for the tournament so it is very pleasing to get such positive feedback.

“Once again we have demonstrated that the wonderful courses in the Highlands of Scotland are highly regarded by leading players and ideal venues for major events.”

Royal Dornoch’s Championship Course is ranked No. 6 on Golf Digest’s Best Courses in the World list. In 2016 the club will mark 400 years of golf being played on the town’s famous links.

The HGL partnership also includes Castle Stuart Golf Links and The Nairn Golf Club, as well as the Kingsmills Hotel and Culloden House Hotel, Inverness; and the Royal Golf Hotel, at Royal Dornoch. The group promotes Play and Stay packages in the Highlands to encourage golf tourism.
