Crazy Gang To Relive Past Glories In Footballers’ Classic At La Manga Club

Leading members from Wimbledon’s fun-packed past will rekindle the famous Crazy Gang spirit at Spain’s La Manga Club this summer when they head to the iconic resort to take part in the 22nd edition of the popular Footballers’ Golf Classic.

Lawrie Sanchez, scorer of the only goal when the Dons stunned Liverpool 1-0 to win the 1988 FA Cup Final, Dave Beasant, Wally Downes and Dean Holdsworth will join former Wimbledon manager Dave Bassett at this year’s event, which take place at the world-famous Murcian resort from June 2-7.

Holdsworth will be making his debut in the 54-hole Stableford competion – which will be played on La Manga Club’s award-winning North and South courses – but the Dons legends will face strong competition from a line-up headed by defending champion, ex-Birmingham and Wales defender Andy Legg.

Record-breaking Northern Ireland goalkeeper Pat Jennings, Andy Morrison, Russell Osman and Kenny Hibbitt are among the other previous winners hoping for further success in Spain, while other illustrious names joining them at the resort will be the likes of Arsenal and Republic of Ireland legend Liam Brady and ex-England internationals Paul Walsh, Gary Shaw, Ray Clemence, Lee Hendrie and Roy McFarland.

The 2018 Footballers’ Golf Classic will feature four days of competitive golf under sunny skies: the one-day Alan Ball Trophy and the three-day main event, with competitors playing in teams of three alongside a different footballer each day.

Entry includes five nights in the resort’s five-star Hotel Principe Felipe, breakfast, welcome and gala dinners and prize-giving with entertainment.

A five-time host of the Spanish Open and set in an area three times the size of Monaco, La Manga Club boasts three 18-hole courses, a nine-hole academy course and outstanding practice amenities – including a recently-rebranded Golf Training Centre – amongst its array of luxury sports and leisure facilities.

The resort hosted the 2018 Spanish Amateur Golf Championship – won by England’s Billy McKenzie this spring, while the resort has also been chosen to stage the prestigious IAGTO Trophy from May 21-24 and will host the annual World Golf Awards for the second consecutive year in November.

The official overseas training base of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), La Manga Club’s unrivalled extensive other facilities include a 28-court tennis centre, a new European Cricket Performance Centre and a 2,000sqm Wellness Centre. In addition, it features the choice of a five-star hotel, four-star serviced apartments and townhouses and more than 15 bars and restaurants.
